Central Switzerland
Large global pharmaceutical company operating with 2000 employees across five different sites in Switzerland. The workforce spanned from the local Swiss affiliate to critical global functions and essential workers, encompassing offices, R&D as well as production facilities.
In response to the COVID-19 outbreak, I played a pivotal role in helping one of the largest global pharmaceutical companies to develop a crisis communications strategy for their workforce in Switzerland. The plan, emphasizing safety and transparency, outlined communication protocols and messaging strategies.
The challenges of transitioning to remote work during the pandemic included rapid adaptation to an evolving situation, communication hurdles in a virtual environment, and addressing employee well-being amidst increased stress. These obstacles demanded a quick and effective response to support a seamless transition to remote work.
At the onset of the pandemic, daily emails played a crucial role in providing trustworthy information to employees. They served to clarify events from the last 24 hours, the current understanding of the crisis, and expectations for the next few days. Emails to employees were also used to communicate the status of the organization's response to COVID-19, including new policies, procedures, or guidelines. They also served as reminders of safety protocols, such as hygiene practices, social distancing guidelines, and any other relevant measures.
The content of emails was further disseminated through other distribution channels, such as the internal blog on the intranet and Yammer. The most critical information was displayed on the TV screens at each site. In case of urgent developments or emergency situations, employees would be additionally notified via SMS, in addition to email. Alongside the emails, a series of blog posts showing support for employees during this rapidly changing environment were created. Some of these posts reflected the messaging intended for the wider organization, while others addressed more local concerns.
